Common ground

What serious Nonviolent Communication programs share.

The four components as the base

Observations, feelings, needs and requests form the foundation of all three programs. Mediate Your Life asks applicants to master them first, the Immersion returns to them across its weekends, and CNVC's intensives build on them through relationships, inner transformation and contribution, as published in September 2026.

Self-empathy and self-connection

Each program sees the practitioner's inner work as a core skill. Self-empathy opens the Immersion curriculum, self-connection is the first of Mediate Your Life's 9 mediation skills, and CNVC's intensives include inner transformation, changing thought patterns, working through anger, gratitude and self-compassion.

Mediation and difficult dialogues

All three include work on conflict. CNVC's contribution track covers mediation and conflict facilitation, the Immersion includes difficult dialogues and mediation, and Mediate Your Life builds an entire program around mediation and conflict coaching, with named maps and processes that make each step teachable.

Structured peer practice

NVC is practiced repeatedly with others. CNVC intensives use daily home groups, the Immersion adds twice-monthly empathy groups and a weekly empathy buddy, and Mediate Your Life organizes weekly practice with partners, recorded sessions and written, audio and video resources.

Anger, grief and reconciliation

Each curriculum makes room for strong emotions. CNVC includes working through anger, the Immersion teaches grief, healing and reconciliation, and Mediate Your Life includes reconciliation and healing processes. In all three, learners practice staying connected to themselves and to others when conversations carry intense feelings.

Differences

Where the programs differ.

Residential immersion and trainer certification: CNVC

CNVC's International Intensive Trainings are 9-day residential retreats led by 4 to 5 Certified Trainers for about 65 participants. CNVC is also the only one of the three that certifies NVC trainers, through a 3- to 5-year path requiring at least 50 training days with at least three different Certified Trainers.

Support between weekends: Immersion in NVC

The Immersion meets one weekend a month for 8 months and fills the time between with monthly coaching calls, twice-monthly empathy groups, a weekly empathy buddy, small-group coaching and a 45-minute individual coaching session. It offers a sliding scale and scholarships, and integrates power and equity into the curriculum.

Mediation certification: Mediate Your Life

Mediate Your Life is the only program of the three with its own certification path in mediation and conflict coaching. It teaches named maps, including the three-chair model, a 5-step mediation process and 9 mediation skills, and covers the foundations of a coaching practice. Applicants need 12 hours of live NVC training.

Length and delivery

CNVC's IIT is a 9-day in-person retreat, the Immersion runs online over 8 months, and Mediate Your Life holds online classes over 12 months. Harmonika Institute teaches its program in person in a cohort of ten, with certification based on two observed practical assessments, a workshop segment and a mock mediation.

How to choose

How to choose a Nonviolent Communication certification program.

  1. 1

Decide if you want to become a CNVC trainer

If you want the CNVC Certified Trainer title, plan for 3 to 5 years and at least 50 training days with Certified Trainers. Programs such as the Immersion count days toward that path; confirm with CNVC which days qualify.

  2. 2

    Personal practice or facilitation

Some programs focus on deepening your own practice, while others train you to lead groups or mediate. Look for published outcomes such as leading workshops, mediating between two people or coaching others through conflict.

  3. 3

    Check prerequisites

Mediate Your Life asks for 12 hours of live NVC training and fluency in the four components, and the Immersion asks for prior introductory NVC training. If you are new to NVC, start with an introductory course or intensive.

  4. 4

    Look at practice support

NVC grows with repetition. Compare home groups, empathy buddies, coaching calls and feedback on your practice, since these shape how much you actually practice between teaching days and after the program ends.

  5. 5

    Budget beyond tuition

Residential intensives add lodging and meals, which ranged from $1,100 to $3,995 for CNVC's 2026 California IIT. Ask about sliding scales, scholarships and discounts, which are common in the U.S. NVC community.

Questions

Nonviolent Communication certification programs: common questions.

How much does NVC training cost?

As published in September 2026, CNVC's California IIT costs $2,295 early bird or $2,675, plus $1,100 to $3,995 for lodging and meals. The 2026-27 Immersion in NVC costs $3,599 at the standard rate, with a sliding scale and scholarships. Mediate Your Life does not publish tuition on the page reviewed. Harmonika Institute's tuition appears in the comparison table.

How long does it take to become an NVC facilitator?

Becoming a CNVC Certified Trainer takes 3 to 5 years and at least 50 training days. Other formats run on shorter timelines: a 9-day CNVC intensive, the 8-month Immersion with 16 training days, or Mediate Your Life's 12-month mediation and coaching program. Facilitator certificates outside CNVC, such as Harmonika Institute's, are separate private credentials.

Can you learn Nonviolent Communication online?

Yes. The Immersion in NVC runs live on Zoom, Mediate Your Life holds weekly 2-hour online classes, and CNVC allows 30 to 50% of certification days online. CNVC's International Intensive Trainings are residential. Harmonika Institute teaches its program in person, with filmed role-plays and mediation practice in small groups.

Is there an official Nonviolent Communication certification?

CNVC, founded by Marshall Rosenberg, certifies NVC trainers through its Certified Trainer path. Other programs issue their own certificates or count days toward CNVC certification. Harmonika Institute's Certified Compassionate Communication Facilitator is a private certification, not a license and not a CNVC certification, and it is not accredited by outside bodies.

Can I mediate conflicts after NVC training?

NVC-based mediation is a specific skill. Mediate Your Life offers a dedicated mediation and conflict coaching path, and the Immersion and CNVC intensives include mediation topics. For legal or court-connected mediation, check your state's requirements. Harmonika Institute's program covers everyday mediation between two people and when to point toward professional or legal mediation.

Methodology

How we compared these programs.

We selected three providers with standing in the U.S. NVC community: CNVC, the organization that certifies trainers; the Immersion in Nonviolent Communication, led by two CNVC Certified Trainers; and Mediate Your Life, a U.S.-born NVC mediation program. Criteria were a published curriculum, recognition in the field and U.S. presence. Regional centers without published curricula and programs outside the U.S. were set aside. Data was collected from provider websites in September 2026. Prices change, so confirm details with each provider.
