Common ground

What serious Enneagram programs share.

The nine types and three centers

All three providers start from the nine types and the three centers of intelligence (body, heart, head). The Narrative Enneagram teaches them through live panels, iEQ9 frames them through core motivations and defensive structures, and The Enneagram in Business applies them to coaching, leadership and teams.

Instincts and the 27 subtypes

Subtypes are a shared second layer. The Narrative Enneagram offers a foundational course on instinctual subtypes, iEQ9 covers the 27 subtypes with wings, lines and levels, and The Enneagram in Business runs a dedicated program, Type, Teach, Transform through Subtypes, for people who teach this material.

Application to individual coaching

Each provider connects type to one-on-one work. The Narrative Enneagram has a Practitioner Training module, iEQ9 trains practitioners to debrief its report and bring feedback into coaching, and The Enneagram in Business offers Coaching with the Enneagram 1.0 and Advanced Coaching 2.0 as live virtual programs.

Accredited hours as a reference point

Recognition by the International Enneagram Association (IEA) or the International Coaching Federation (ICF) carries weight with U.S. coaches. As published, The Narrative Enneagram is an IEA Accredited School with Distinction, The Enneagram in Business lists IEA contact hours and ICF credits, and iEQ9 lists 36 ICF CCEUs.

Real practice before the credential

Two of the three providers tie certification to real practice. The Narrative Enneagram requires practicums, including 12 to 18 typing interviews and 7 meetings with a coach for the typing track. iEQ9 requires an assessed case study with a coaching client before full practitioner certification.

Differences

Where the programs differ.

Panels versus psychometrics

The Narrative Enneagram teaches through panels, where people of one type describe their experience in live interviews. Integrative Enneagram Solutions builds its training around the iEQ9 questionnaire and its professional reports. The first centers on listening to lived experience; the second gives practitioners a structured report to debrief with clients.

Length and structure of the path

The Narrative Enneagram requires four foundational courses before a certification of about 12 months, and its costs page lists an 18-month path. The Enneagram in Business condenses programs into 5 or 6 live virtual sessions. iEQ9 accreditation runs over 8 online half-days or 4 days, followed by a case study.

Workplace and team focus

The Enneagram in Business is designed for organizations, with programs on leadership, team transformations and train-the-trainer work, supported by trainer guides of 142 and 190 pages. The Narrative Enneagram separates teaching groups (CNET) from individual practice (CNEP). iEQ9 serves coaches who debrief individual and team reports.

Published tuition

Published tuition varies widely. The Narrative Enneagram lists $2,695 for typing and $4,495 for Teacher or Practitioner certification. The Enneagram in Business lists $1,900 for Coaching 1.0 and 2.0 and $1,800 for Development by Design. Integrative Enneagram Solutions does not publish a current U.S. price on its accreditation page.

How to choose

How to choose a Enneagram certification program.

  1. 1

Start from how you will use the Enneagram

Decide whether you mainly want to type people, teach groups, coach individuals or work with teams. The Narrative Enneagram separates these into distinct certifications, while other programs combine them. Matching the credential to your planned work keeps you from paying for tracks you will not use.

  2. 2

Check which recognition matters to you

If IEA or ICF recognition matters to your clients or employer, confirm on the provider's site what is accredited: the school, the program or the contact hours. Harmonika Institute's CEF is a private certification with no IEA or ICF accreditation, so its hours are not IEA contact hours.

  3. 3

Compare live time with total time

Look at live teaching time, practicum requirements and the months needed to finish. A short virtual program can be completed in two weeks, while practicum-based certifications can take a year or more. Ask how much practice is expected between sessions and how it is assessed.

  4. 4

    Look at the typing method

Some programs rely on interviews and panels, others on a questionnaire and report. If you prefer that clients identify their own type through conversation, favor interview-based training. If you want a standardized tool for organizations, a psychometric accreditation may suit you.

  5. 5

Ask about cohort size and feedback

Live practice with feedback is where typing and coaching skills develop. Ask how many participants join each session, how breakout work is organized and who gives feedback on your interviews. Harmonika Institute runs live online cohorts with small-group practice on every teaching day.

Questions

Enneagram certification programs: common questions.

How much does an Enneagram certification cost in the U.S.?

As published in September 2026, The Enneagram in Business charges $1,900 for Coaching with the Enneagram 1.0 or 2.0. The Narrative Enneagram charges $2,695 for Typing certification, $4,495 for Teacher or Practitioner certification and $6,595 for both, plus foundational courses such as Experiencing the Narrative Enneagram at $650. Integrative Enneagram Solutions does not publish a current U.S. price for iEQ9 accreditation.

How long does it take to become a certified Enneagram practitioner?

It depends on the track. Coaching with the Enneagram 1.0 runs in 6 virtual sessions over 2 weeks. iEQ9 accreditation takes 8 online half-days or 4 in-person days, followed by a client case study. The Narrative Enneagram requires four foundational courses and then about 12 months of modules and practicums.

Can I get Enneagram certification online?

Yes. Live online training is now common. The Enneagram in Business teaches in live virtual sessions of 4 to 5 hours, iEQ9 offers 8 online half-days with breakout rooms, and The Narrative Enneagram runs live online modules with in-person or virtual components. Harmonika Institute's CEF is taught live online, camera on, with breakout-room practice.

Is Enneagram certification accredited or licensed?

Enneagram certifications are private credentials rather than professional licenses, and recognition comes from professional bodies. The Narrative Enneagram is an IEA Accredited School with Distinction, The Enneagram in Business lists IEA contact hours and ICF credits, and iEQ9 lists ICF CCEUs. Harmonika Institute's CEF is a private certification, not a license, and is not accredited by outside bodies.

Do I need to know my own type before training?

Requirements vary. The Narrative Enneagram asks candidates to complete four foundational courses, starting with Experiencing the Narrative Enneagram, before its certification modules. Harmonika Institute lists no prerequisites for its CEF; the first day covers the symbol, the three centers and the ethics of typing, including the limits of online tests.

What is the difference between a typing certification and a coaching certification?

A typing certification trains you to run interviews that help a person identify her own type; The Narrative Enneagram's CETP is one example. Coaching programs, such as Coaching with the Enneagram 1.0 from The Enneagram in Business, focus on using type within coaching goals and sessions. iEQ9 accreditation adds a questionnaire and a report debrief.

Methodology

How we compared these programs.

We selected three providers active in the U.S. that publish a detailed curriculum and program structure and hold IEA or ICF recognition or wide use among coaches: The Narrative Enneagram, The Enneagram in Business and Integrative Enneagram Solutions. A school with closed enrollment and one without published duration or tuition were set aside. Data comes from each provider's website, collected in September 2026. Prices and schedules change, so check with each provider before enrolling.
