Breathwork certification in the U.S. is private and shaped by lineage brands rather than one credential. Published programs range from a 9-day California retreat from $3,200 (David Elliott) to hybrid 400 to 450-hour paths costing $5,900 to $7,200 (Unity Breathwork, Alchemy of Breath) with residentials in Mexico or Italy. The GPBA publishes voluntary standards. Choose by hours, safety training, format and travel budget.

All three programs are built around an active breathing technique. Alchemy of Breath and Unity Breathwork teach conscious connected breathing, and David Elliott teaches a two-part pranayama breath from Level 1. Each program trains facilitators to guide a full session using this core technique.
Each provider includes trauma content. Alchemy of Breath teaches trauma-informed practice with neuroscience basics, Unity Breathwork covers trauma education alongside breath physiology, and David Elliott dedicates Level 5 to the body-trauma connection and emotional release. Expect guidance on emotional safety during intense sessions.
Circles and workshops are a main outlet for breathwork facilitators, and all three programs prepare for them. Alchemy of Breath teaches reading the room and leading groups, Unity Breathwork covers ethics and space-holding, and David Elliott's Level 3 focuses on group facilitation, group dynamics and the facilitator's voice.

Alchemy of Breath runs a seven-chapter Inner Journey on shadow work, dreams and archetypes alongside facilitation skills. Unity Breathwork adds functional breathing, nervous system regulation, TRE and voice work. David Elliott spends a full level on self-worth, money and boundaries before group facilitation.

The Global Professional Breathwork Alliance sets voluntary training standards, including 400 hours over at least 2 years for a practitioner. If that benchmark matters to your clients or partners, ask each program how its hours and requirements map to it.
Active breathing can bring intense physical and emotional reactions. Ask how each program covers contraindications, health screening, trauma sensitivity and what to do when a participant becomes overwhelmed, and how much supported practice you get before leading others.

Much of the training can be online, but in-person time remains common. Alchemy of Breath and Unity Breathwork combine online study and live video calls with a 7 or 8-day residential. The Global Professional Breathwork Alliance is a voluntary standards body for breathwork training. Its published standard for a practitioner is 400 hours over at least 2 years, including 8 hours of ethics and client work with oversight. It does not issue a license. Unity Breathwork and Alchemy of Breath both publish a GPBA listing or accreditation.
Not always. Active breathing styles have contraindications that responsible programs teach, often including pregnancy, epilepsy, cardiovascular conditions and unstable blood pressure. Facilitators use health questionnaires, informed consent and a safety plan, and refer people to licensed health professionals when needed. Ask any program how it teaches screening and emergency responses.
