Common ground

What serious Sound Healing programs share.

Hands-on instrument training

Playing instruments well is the core skill in all three programs. Globe Institute teaches crystal and Tibetan bowls, gongs, drums and tuning forks, Sound Medicine Academy covers metal and crystal bowls and gong mastery, and Biofield Tuning builds its method entirely around tuning forks.

The science of sound

Globe Institute and Sound Medicine Academy both teach resonance, entrainment and psychoacoustics, including binaural beats, along with applied music theory such as intervals and consonance. This grounding helps practitioners choose and combine instruments intentionally and describe their work to clients in credible terms.

Students give and receive sessions

Practice between students appears in every program. Globe Institute students give and receive sessions and lead sound baths, Sound Medicine Academy adds real-time coaching and a final practicum during its intensive, and Biofield Tuning reviews the standard session through hands-on practice.

Assessment beyond attendance

Each provider asks for work that shows skill. Globe Institute requires a final exam, a two-page research paper and 90% attendance; Sound Medicine Academy includes a final case study in its online course; Biofield Tuning certifies practitioners after assignments submitted within 12 months.

Mixed in-person and online formats

All three combine formats. Globe Institute offers hybrid, fully online and summer intensive options; Sound Medicine Academy pairs a three-day Brooklyn intensive with its 200-hour online course; Biofield Tuning offers standard virtual, accelerated virtual and in-person classes. In-person time is valued for instrument technique.

Differences

Where the programs differ.

Voice training and a state-approved school

Globe Institute dedicates a full 45-hour course to voice, toning, chant and mantra. It is approved by the State of California under the Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009, has more than 20 years of activity, and offers optional internships in research centers, care centers and hospitals for local graduates.

ISTA accreditation and a critical-thinking module

Sound Medicine Academy's 200-hour program holds ISTA accreditation, a path toward the ISTA credential, and includes a module examining claims about Solfeggio frequencies, chakra frequencies and DNA repair. Its bowl training adds vibroacoustic massage with placement, hygiene and contraindications, and each online segment includes one-on-one mentoring.

A proprietary tuning fork method

Biofield Tuning teaches Eileen McKusick's tuning fork method in four levels, including seated chair sessions and the sonic meridian flush. Certification follows Level 2 and post-training assignments. The same content is available in three formats: standard virtual, accelerated virtual or in person in Vermont and California.

How to choose

How to choose a Sound Healing certification program.

  1. 1

Decide which instruments you want to master

If you want range, look at programs covering bowls, gongs, forks and voice, such as Globe Institute and Sound Medicine Academy. If tuning forks appeal most, Biofield Tuning's method goes deep on one instrument family. Match the curriculum to the sessions you plan to offer.

  2. 2

Check hours against the ISTA benchmark

ISTA, the most cited professional reference, asks for 200 training hours, which can combine schools, plus a quiz and 30 hours of continuing education every 24 months. Sound Medicine Academy's program is ISTA-accredited, and Globe Institute's certificate totals 186 hours. Confirm how any program counts toward your goals.

  3. 3

Plan for sound baths and one-on-one work

The market includes individual sessions and group sound baths in studios and retreats. Globe Institute and Sound Medicine Academy teach both formats. Choose a program that lets you practice leading a group as well as playing for one person on a table.

  4. 4

    Weigh live correction against flexibility

Instrument technique benefits from correction in the room, while theory adapts well to online study. Sound Medicine Academy and Biofield Tuning offer short in-person options, and Globe Institute offers hybrid and online paths. Pick the mix that fits your schedule and budget, including your instrument kit.

Questions

Sound Healing certification programs: common questions.

How much does sound healing certification cost?

As published in September 2026, Globe Institute charges $2,600 for its hybrid certificate and $2,000 online. Sound Medicine Academy lists $2,200 for its three-day Brooklyn intensive with online course access and $1,900 for its 200-hour online program. Biofield Tuning charges $1,995 to $2,495 for Level 1 and $2,595 to $2,695 for Level 2. Budget separately for instruments.

How long does sound healing training take?

Globe Institute's certificate totals 186 contact hours, completed within nine months. Sound Medicine Academy's online program is 200 hours in 11 segments, and its in-person intensive lasts three days. Biofield Tuning certification requires Level 1 and Level 2; an in-person level takes three full days, and virtual classes run over six weeks or six accelerated days.

Can I become a sound healer online?

Yes. Globe Institute offers a fully online certificate, Sound Medicine Academy sells a 200-hour self-paced online program, and Biofield Tuning runs standard and accelerated virtual classes. Many learners still add in-person time because striking, rimming and placing instruments benefit from live correction. Harmonika Institute teaches its sound healing program in person.

Do sound healers need a license or accreditation?

No state license exists for sound healing in the U.S. The most cited professional reference is the International Sound Therapy Association (ISTA), which asks for 200 training hours, a quiz and ongoing education. Globe Institute is state-approved in California, and Sound Medicine Academy's 200-hour program is ISTA-accredited. Harmonika Institute's certificate is a private certification, not a license, with no outside accreditation.

What do sound healing programs teach?

Most programs cover sound physics and psychoacoustics, hands-on instrument technique, session design and practice between students. Globe Institute adds 45 hours of voice work, Sound Medicine Academy adds vibroacoustic bowl massage and a critical look at frequency claims, and Biofield Tuning teaches its own tuning fork protocol. Globe Institute and Sound Medicine Academy also cover business topics such as marketing and pricing.

Methodology

How we compared these programs.

We selected three U.S. sound healing providers with published curricula and prices: Globe Institute, a California state-approved school with a 186-hour certificate; Sound Medicine Academy, whose 200-hour program holds ISTA accreditation and includes an in-person intensive; and Biofield Tuning, the most structured tuning fork method. Programs without published content or prices were left out. Data were collected from each provider's website in September 2026; prices change, so check with each provider.
