Common ground

What serious Ayurveda programs share.

Foundations: doshas, elements and agni

Every program opens with Ayurvedic philosophy: the elements, the three doshas and agni, the digestive fire. The Ayurvedic Institute calls this Foundations of Ayurveda, California College of Ayurveda teaches Philosophy, and Kerala Ayurveda Academy starts with The Essence of Ayurveda.

Anatomy and physiology

NAMA's first professional level asks for 4 anatomy and physiology credits, and all three schools include them. The Ayurvedic Institute teaches anatomy and physiology, while California College of Ayurveda and Kerala Ayurveda Academy also present the body through dedicated Ayurvedic physiology courses.

Nutrition with cooking

Food is taught in the kitchen as well as in theory. The Ayurvedic Institute pairs Food as Medicine with cooking classes, Kerala Ayurveda Academy teaches Ayurvedic Nutrition and Cooking, and California College of Ayurveda covers Ayurvedic nutrition plus client education on food and food combining during its internship.

Assessment and observation

Each school trains students to assess constitution. The Ayurvedic Institute's clinical training covers pulse reading and tongue observation, California College of Ayurveda teaches consultation and evaluation with basics of pulse reading in its internship, and Kerala Ayurveda Academy offers courses on assessing and managing dosha imbalances.

Supervised client consultations

Client work is required at all three, in line with NAMA's minimum of 50 client encounters. The Ayurvedic Institute runs a student clinic on campus, California College of Ayurveda requires at least 60 supervised one-on-one consultations, and Kerala Ayurveda Academy includes a 5-day in-person AHC Practical.

Differences

Where the programs differ.

How much is in person

The Ayurvedic Institute teaches in Asheville, hybrid or live online, with in-person hours required for NAMA certification. Kerala Ayurveda Academy runs mostly on weekends and virtual classes, plus 5 in-person days in Milpitas. California College of Ayurveda offers on-site, weekend online or live online study, with an internship possible in your own city.

Distinctive program elements

How to choose

How to choose a Ayurveda certification program.

  1. 1

Decide whether you want NAMA exam eligibility

If you plan to sit for a NAMA certification exam, choose a program that states eligibility, as the three schools compared here do. Harmonika Institute's CAWC is a private wellness coaching certification, not a NAMA-level program, and is not accredited by outside bodies.

  2. 2

    Check the in-person commitment

NAMA-track programs include in-person components, from 5 days at Kerala Ayurveda Academy to on-campus study in Asheville or Nevada City. Consider travel, lodging and time away from work. Harmonika Institute's CAWC is taught in person with a small cohort.

  3. 3

    Compare client practice

Ask how many client consultations you complete, who gives feedback and whether you can do them locally. California College of Ayurveda requires at least 60, The Ayurvedic Institute uses a student clinic, and Harmonika Institute asks for six documented consultations in your practice log.

  4. 4

Look at the kitchen and daily practice

Ayurveda is learned by living it. Check whether cooking, yoga, breathing and daily routines are practiced in class. All three schools compared include nutrition with cooking or client food education, and Harmonika Institute includes a cooking day and abhyanga practice.

  5. 5

    Plan the total budget

Tuition ranges from $8,800 to $16,995 in the programs compared. Add books, travel for in-person components and time for internships. Ask about payment plans, such as $776 per month at Kerala Ayurveda Academy or $605 per month at California College of Ayurveda.

A school with paused enrollment and one without published tuition were set aside. Data comes from each provider's website, collected in September 2026.
